The cobblestones used in American cities reflect maritime history. These rectangular granite stones or Belgian blocks were initially used as the ship's ballast. In the early-19th century, when American cities began replacing the dirt and oyster-shell streets, they often chose Belgian block to do it. Today most city streets are paved, but there are still streets of cobblestone where cats jump puddles.
