The bookmark was inspired by one of the beauties in Kitagawa utamaro's triptych of courtesans and children strolling along a riverbank in the historic city of Edo modern-day Tokyo. Japanese prints depicting actors and courtesans and the world they inhabited are referred to as ukiyo-e or the art of the floating world. Widely sought after by collectors since the mid-19th century, Ukiyo-e is perhaps the most popular and best-known of Japanese art forms in the western world.
